Summary

A six and a half hour, three-session course for adults who are considering taking up beekeeping as a hobby, or have been doing so for a short period of time, or just wish to know more about keeping European honey bees. The course is conducted by the Melbourne Beekeepers Club Inc.

    The course aims to provide

    • Information and practical experience to enable prospective beekeepers to decide if they will be able to manage a beehive in the future.
    • Basic beekeeping information and beekeeping practice for prospective and new beekeepers.

        Course topics will include

        • Opening a beehive    
        • Inside a beehive  
        • Choosing a site for a beehive    
        • Required equipment     
        • Stings and Safety    
        • Beekeeper responsibilities 

          Your understanding of the course will not be formally assessed but a Certificate of Participation listing the topics that were covered in the course will be issued.

          Course Guidelines

          - Emphasise a scientific and practical approach to beekeeping.
          - Integrate practical beekeeping training and required understandings.
          - Use constructive teaching methods, cater for individual differences in learning styles, and encourage teamwork.
          - Be consistent with Beekeeping Certificate III in Beekeeping outcomes.
          - Applicable to successful beekeeping in various situations- urban, suburban and rural.

          Course Presenters

          The course will be delivered by a team of experienced beekeepers and educators.

          Time and Dates

          The course will be delivered in three sessions

          1. Thursday 5th October 2023 (7:00pm to 9:00pm) by Zoom.

          • Session will be recorded and available for viewing afterwards.

          2. Practical session

          (a) Alternative 1 Sunday 8th October or Sunday 15th October. A two and half an hour practical session at a hive at the University of Melbourne Parkville. Either 10:30 am to 1:00 pm, or 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Maximum of three participants per session. Personal protective equipment will be provided. If weather conditions are not suitable, then an alternative date will be arranged. If Covid prevents you from attending the scheduled practical session, then alternative arrangements can be made.

          (b) Alternative 2 (Not on Sunday 8th October or Sunday 15th October) If you already have your own hive at your home and if it is close to central Melbourne, then the practical session may be conducted at your own hive at an agreed date and time.

          3. Thursday 19th October (7:00pm to 9:00pm) by Zoom

          • Session will be recorded and available for viewing afterwards. 

          Practical Session

          • Beforehand, you will be given advice about what clothing and footwear to wear.
          • When enrolling for the course we will ask you to provide your bee sting history, an emergency contact, and your agreement to accept full responsibility for any bee stings and accidents that you might incur.
          • During the practical session, we will be taking photos and videos for viewing on the second Zoom session and for possible inclusion on the MBC web site and in other publications.

          Enrolment

          • The registration fee is $60.
          • Registrations close at 5pm on Thursday 28th September.
          • Registration is only available to members of the Melbourne Beekeepers Club.
          • Non-members can join the Club and then register for the course. Click here to join the Club from the Join menu.
          • Club members will be informed of the course a week before it is advertised more widely.
          • Registrations will be accepted in the order that they are received. There will be a waitlist.
          • At its discretion, the MBC reserves the right to not accept or to cancel (with full fee reimbursement) any registration.
          • Registrants can cancel their enrolment up to two weeks before the start of the course (21st September) and receive a $30 refund. After that date there will be no $30 refund unless a waitlister takes your place. Click here to notify cancellations to MBC Secretary.
